Rev Dr Julie Levett

I've been an Associate Minister here since July 2010 but have been a member of St. Saviour's Brookwood since October 1994. I’m also a part-time Teacher in a school in the Woking area, married to Richard who is a Licensed Lay Minister in the Parish and we have two adult children, Joshua and Charis, who seem to cope well with a split-personality (in relation to work) Mum!  My journey to ordination has been long and varied! I didn’t grow up within a Christian family but I was baptised as a baby. I really became interested in the Christian faith as a 15 year-old after I was invited by a friend to her church youth group. I came to faith about 2 years later but it didn’t impact my career at that point.  My first career began as a Test Engineer for British Aerospace and later included various management positions. However, the company decided to close my site at around the time I became pregnant with my first child. I took redundancy and began a second career as a full-time mum. After my second child was born I considered working again and thought about teaching Design and Technology at Secondary School level. These plans changed after I began to nanny for my Goddaughter and began teaching her to read, write and count; and so her mother persuaded me that I should pursue teaching younger children instead.  It was then that God first raised the ordination question in my life when I asked my Vicar if he'd be a referee for my teacher training application. He said he'd be happy to do it but I should be applying for a different type of training, i.e. ordination. I thought he was joking and replied, "No way!" I didn’t have the skill set or patience for that nor did my husband and I feel called to move from this area, so he couldn’t be right (or so I thought at the time)! His response to that was it was amazing how many teachers ended up becoming ordained: which turned out to be true for me! After qualifying as a teacher and then teaching part-time for 2 years I felt that teaching was my paid vocation but that God was drawing me into something else he wanted me to do too, and that’s how I came to be ordained in the Parish from which I was called.  I enjoy reading, brain puzzles such as crosswords and sudokus, singing and am still part of the parish's 20:20 puppet team alongside my 2 children. With all the family, school and church activities (plus my advancing age!), I no longer much time for sports although I do enjoy swimming.  If you see me out and about in Knaphill or Brookwood then do stop and introduce yourself and have a chat.  You can contact me via email.
